Huichol are an indigenous, Indian, ethnic group of western central Mexico, living in the Sierra Madre Occidental range in the Mexican states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Durango. The beaded art is a relatively new innovation and is constructed using glass, plastic or metal beads. Common bead art forms include masks, bowls and figurines. Like all Huichol art, the bead work depicts the prominent patterns and symbols featured in the Huichol religion. The time consuming into each and every single bead sewn into the thread is not easy but the finish product is a fine work of art.
This elaborate beadwork is called "Chaquira". The Deer’s indicates deer deities which are numerous and very significant. The Huichols believe that deer give their lives willingly to those who hunt them in a sacred manner. Flowers play a part in all Huichol ceremonies, and all flowers are considered sacred in healing rituals wherein the patient's head is anointed with flowers.
