    Description

Huichol Beaded Sacred Prayer Bowl Mexican Folk Art Chaquira Indigenous Shell 7"W
Beautiful, multi-colored glass beaded (chaquira) abalone shell sacred Shaman prayer bowl.  Prayer bowls are placed in shrines and sacred sites.  The Shaman spiritual leaders use sacred prayer bowls during their ceremonies and it is thought that anyone who holds a prayer bowl will have good luck.  In the Huichol culture, the Shaman communicate with the Gods, lead ceremonies, recite divine passages, heal the sick and are thought to have supernatural powers to help the Huichol people.
Huichol Mexican Indian folk art is truly unique and all handmade by the indigenous people of the Sierra Madre mountains in Jalisco, Mexico.
Using the traditional Huichol techniques of pressing Campeche wax onto the inside of this abalone shell and adding, one-by-one, glass beads this prayer bowl depicts the offering message.
Absolutely gorgeous, resin coated on the outside.  Smooth exterior allows the fabulous colors to shine on the outside of the bowl! (The bottom of the bowl is almost as gorgeous as the inside of the bowl.)
We love how the artist let some of the abalone shell show on the inside, too.
Using varying bright multi-colored glass beads the symbols are added for offerings to the gods.
It takes the Huichol Indians hours and hours, days and days, of work to complete one piece.
Some of the symbols used in this art piece include the peyote flower, (honored by the Shaman leaders for giving influence to the gods, by communication with ancestors, for messages about the Huichol future crops, rain and healing of the people), a prayer arrow, a snake for fertility and scorpions to protect the Peyote.
This sacred prayer bowl is outlined with graduated adobe tan color glass beads symbolizing the sacred grounds for ceremonies.
    Measurements:

This is a gorgeous gift for an engagement, wedding or anniversary.
