    Description

CATRINA Huichol Beaded Art Figurine Mexican Day of the Dead Handmade Sculpture
Huichol Mexican Indian folk art is truly unique and all handmade by the indigenous people of the Sierra Madre mountains in Jalisco, Mexico.
Absolutely gorgeous, stunning multi-color glass beaded, Day of the Dead, Catrina resin/clay sculpture.  Using the traditional Huichol techniques of pressing Campeche wax onto this sculpture and adding, one-by-one, glass beads this Day of the Dead La Calavera Catrina depicts the offering message.
The Catrina was first seen by illustrator Jose Guadalupe Posada.  Catrina is related to the European styles of the early 20th century and gives a portrait to the Mexican people of aspiring to be an aristocrat in the early era.
Dressed in a gorgeous beaded long sleeve and low-cut, 3D aristocratic gown with mermaid style long ruffle hem and rich 3D neck scarf, this Catrina portrays a sassy and elegant pose.  While assuming an aristocratic attitude, she knows all of the attention is on her.  Her hat, typical of the upper class in Europe, is large brimmed with a 3D pink beaded plume, two Peyote flowers on a black, platinum pearl, white and blue beaded background.  On the edges of her hat are 3D antiqued roses with platinum pearl, black and blue stripes under the brim.
We love this Huichol artist's delicate attention to detail in symbols.  On the front is the peyote flower that is used by the Shamans during their religious ceremonies.  The deer, messenger to the Gods, is seen on her legs, surrounded by scorpions and Peyote buds with a platinum pearl corn stalk between his antlers.  On her belly and her back, the blue pearl scorpion protects the large peyote.  On the back, he gave her a large blue deer, the ultimate messenger to the Gods and protector of Father Sun, the power and master of the heavens to bring healthy abundant crops to the people.  Below Father Sun, the ground is rich with water for nourishing the crops.
Her arms on the gown are striped with the fire colors.  Red the fire, orange the sacred grounds and yellow the special root that is used for face painting during ceremonies.
The symbols used on her dress and hat make her seem as if she comes from an aristocratic family in a most elegant way.  Gorgeous!
